Have a nice life death11/9/2023 Post rock is similar to its parent genre, rock, but differs in song structure and timbre. Musically, the album draws on many different genres, but can still be considered in the realm of post rock. It should be said that despite a lack in recording options, “Deathconsciousness”, and the way it was mixed, still sound better produced than many bands’ first demos. The lo-fi element is actually preferred in some circles, but it isn’t widely accepted. Given the fact that the duo recorded in a bedroom with inexpensive equipment, the resultant mix is what many call “lo-fi”. While excellently written and arranged, the recording styles may drive off even more listeners. Even before touching on the album’s more depressing elements, the very styles that Have A Nice Life incorporate are minimally popular at best. Let me start by saying that Have A Nice Life isn’t for everybody. And after a quick google of the materials in the text, the reader will quickly discover that the entire premise and the sources of the booklet are “…either hopelessly obscure or entirely fictional” (RateyourMusic). Despite being a well written and amusing read, the author’s name is redacted on the album. The paper continues to touch on events and legacies resulting from Antiochus’ life after his death. Antiochus, according to the text, is the founder of the impossibly obscure Antiochean branch of Christianity. He recounts the stories and events occurring in the life of Antiochus, a prophet in the thirteenth century. Also titled “Deathconsciousness”, it is a text written by a professor of Religious History at the University of Massachusetts. The booklet accompanying the album is, in my opinion, half of the experience all in itself. Humans have a lot of anxiety over the prospect of ceasing to be”. In an interview with Scene Point Blank, Tim says “belief in/hope for a hereafter, whether it is reincarnation or paradise, is quite old. In “Deathconsciousness'” case, the album is constructed around the attitude the west has surrounding death. For those unfamiliar with the term, a concept album is basically still an album, but it has been written in such a way that every track is unified around a constant theme or story. The album is a concept album, like Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and The Mars Volta’s “De-loused in the Comatorium”. Its grisly and grim album cover, a cropped portion of Jacques-Louis David’s painting “The Death of Marat”, is a perfect lighting to set the mood of this undertaking. From the start, “Deathconsciousness” separates itself from other releases not only by being a dual disc album, but also by being bundled with a 70 page booklet. The album took the team nearly six years to write, record, and produce (Macuga, and Barret). Have A Nice Life is a duo from Middletown, Connecticut, consisting of Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga.
